Promoting Your Website

I was recently asked by a client “How can I get more traffic to my website? One of the problems is the expectation people will flock to your beautiful new website as soon as it goes live. I often say “the world is not waiting for your website” you have to tell them about it.

Here are some thoughts for attracting visitors to your site. This covers the main areas and perhaps some you may not have considered. It is not a definitive guide as there will always be another approach that I do not mention such as towing a banner behind an aircraft – – I’ve mentioned it now but there will be others! Take the hint in the photograph Write them down! Ideas will come to you at any time and may seem a bit crazy at first. Keep a list of possibilities.

There are a number of avenues for promoting your site both paid and free. Note: FREE (the world’s favorite four-letter “F” word) means no direct money transaction. There is likely to be a cost in time and perhaps a cash investment to maximize the free opportunity e.g. training.

Start Point

The first step which is often missed is to define your ideal client/customer. You must know who you are targeting to ensure your message is appropriate in content and context.

There is no point in promoting to a teenage audience in the daily newspaper.

After the first item (SEO) the ideas are not in order of importance as it will be dependent upon your target audience.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO is arguably the most important aspect of the effective promotion of your website. Currently, almost 2 billion websites (increasing daily) make being found on the internet a huge challenge. It is important to recognize whilst SEO is crucial to success it is not a magic wand, it can take months for the benefits to be realized.

SEO involves the basic structure of your website the content, including images, and the use of keyword phrases. Essentially the search engines are looking for sites that have content that is current, interesting, and relevant to the person searching. They want to quickly answer the searchers’ needs. Your SEO strategy may include content you have created and technical input from your website provider or an SEO agency.

Whilst valuable for all search engines the focus is usually Google as it’s the most popular search engine controlling 90% of the global search engine market. The good news is – If it’s good for Google it’s generally good for the others such as Bing, DuckDuckGo, Baido, and Dogpile.

Google

In addition to your SEO efforts, you can utilize two other aspects of Google. Paid advertising with a Google Ads account. You need to have a clear strategy and a system to test and measure results. Without clarity, it is very easy to waste money rather than achieve your objectives.

Google Business Profile (previously Google My Business) listing. Most businesses will find a GBP listing extremely valuable. The listing is free and provides a great opportunity to be found in searches. The reviews are hugely beneficial.

The second biggest search engine worldwide is YouTube. You can create your own video channel for free or use the paid advertising opportunity. Video content is becoming the most successful approach to attracting attention and no longer has a huge cost barrier.
